Abstract

Elizabeth Buckley Curtis was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi in 1953. She was part of a military family, and she shares stories of her father (Vietnam War era and following years) who was a West Point graduate, her husband (Vietnam War), his uncle, and her maternal grandfather who was a World War II Army chaplain in the European Theater. She herself served in the Navy from 1981 to 1985 and focuses specifically on her experience being stationed in Panama, both as a regular service member and as a woman in a then male-dominated role. She also talks about memories from her childhood, the technological changes her grandmother witnessed, and the conception of the military by Americans in the past and present.
