Milton Moody was born in Dickens, Texas, on August 28, 1942, and grew up in Midland, Texas. He joined the armed forces on his 23rd birthday in 1965 and served until 1968. In this interview, he recounts his intense training at Fort Polk, Louisiana, the hardships he and his peers faced in Vietnam—some as young as 17 years old—his creative methods for battling the monsoon season, and the dedication and appreciation he held as a proud American. Moody was deployed to Cu Chi Village, north of Saigon, at the age of 25 after attending engineering school. There, he designed the structure for their military station and the roads for the bridge over the Saigon River. As a lieutenant, Moody commanded an engineering workforce whose heroic actions earned him a Heroic Award from the U.S. Army after facing an enemy ambush in May 1968. His resourcefulness, genuine care, and vigorous and unrelenting courage were recognized as he assisted his personnel through the open field and administered first aid to the injured, feeling a deep sense of responsibility to protect his brothers and community.
