Abstract

Robert Broene was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on September 29, 1945. Broene enlisted with the United States Navy in order to fulfill his dream of becoming a sailor, and had a career spanning over twenty years. In this interview, Broene discusses both his time aboard nuclear submarines during the Cold War, as well as his time stationed overseas. Broene describes many different anecdotes about his time in the service and explains many specific situations unique to a submariner. Throughout the interview, Broene sheds light on both high tense situations with Soviet submarines to expressing some of the Navy’s culture and traditions.
