This collection includes documents and forms related to the World War II naval service of William Camfield (1908-1990). Camfield enlisted in 1944 as a 36-year-old married man with two children. In the 1930s he worked in construction and as a maintenance mechanic and then in 1941 he began working at Goodfellow Air Force Base as an electrician. When he became interested in serving, his supervisor assisted him in acquiring the position of machinist, operating power on board of his ship. Documents included in this collection include Camfield’s application for enlistment and associated documents, various identification cards, a 1945 Thanksgiving Day menu, a Christmas 1945 booklet for the U.S.S. Winged Arrow, a 1946 booklet about the duties and skills of a Chief Machinist’s Mate, discharge papers, and VA forms.
