Joseph Tweedy came to the Concho Valley in 1877 and established the community of Knickbocker Texas. He reared sheep and in 1881 was elected president of the first Wool Growers Association in the area. He also helped start the San Jose Irrigation Company, was involved in mining in the Lajitis area of the Big Bend, and operated the general store in Knickerbocker. The father of four died in 1928. The Tweedy Family Papers consists of 51 boxes of personal and business papers, diaries, correspondence, store ledgers, deeds and other legal documents, and seven books and periodicals. In addition, a moderate number of photographs, newspaper clippings and periodicals are included.
