Oral memoirs of Charles F. Winkelspecht Jr.: an interview conducted on December 9th, 2022
    (2024-09-17)
Charles Winkelspecht was born in Riverside, New Jersey on January 19th, 1951. After trying to go to college twice, he visited the Army recruiter with his brother-in-law, Mike. After his first choice of helicopter pilot was denied due to his eyesight, he switched gears and was enlisted to be a German linguist. While stationed in a number of places in Germany, including Field Station Berlin, he participated in Volksmarching, which is akin to a 5k, winning several medals for his participation in them. After the conflict was over, Winkelspecht was brought back to the United States to teach others how to intercept radio signals, serving a total of 20 years in the service, after which he retired with his wife, Susan, to San Angelo.
