Irion County rancher and cowboy, Montgomery (Monte) Blackwell Noelke, Jr., was born on 17 June 1928. Monte became known throughout the state for his long-running column, “Short Grass Country,” which appeared in Livestock Weekly for over half a century. In addition to his prolific writing, Monte served as president of the Mertzon School Board. He died on 6 December 2012.
