    Oral memoirs of Mark Webb: An interview conducted on January 11, 2022

    Mark Webb was born in Ferndale, Michigan in 1949. In July of 1968, he joined the Army at Fort Knox, Kentucky. After completing infantry training at Fort Polk, Webb served in the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam. His unit’s mission changed often so he acted in many locations in Vietnam. While Webb disliked politicians’ poor military decisions, he enjoyed the connections that he made with his fellow service members and the friendly Vietnam locals. Webb’s tour ended in June of 1970 and while he was traveling home, he encountered protestors of the Vietnam War. Because of this political context, Webb did not display his most personally valued award, his Combat Infantryman Badge, in his civilian life until 1985. Mark Webb considers his Vietnam service as something he did, not something he is.
